All of you have probably seen the Fantasy Camp concept, mostly applied to pro sports where some semi-famous or retired player shows up to give advice to youngsters (or oldsters pretending to be youngsters) intent on become pros. Even in my limited knowledge of sports I recognize the “star instructors” are seldom such but admire the idea that wanna-bes and never-weres can rub shoulders with we-all-know-they-probably-never-really-will-bes.
Therefore, I was blown out of the water when words reached us about this year’s Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp. Maybe it’s due to my coming of age during the whole Hair Metal scene but I knew every single counselor and wouldn’t hesitate to spend a day picking their brains for instruction and tips. Gilby Clarke, Kip Winger, Mark Slaughter, David Ellefson, Chris Slade, Glenn Hughes, amongst others - these guys were playing in bands that formed the basis of how I view rock music today. So first and foremost, my hat’s off to the Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Crew for loading the roster with name talent.
To sweeten the deal, for the first time the Camp is going on tour, doing sessions in different cities, so keep an eye on what famous bands are from the city you’re in. For instance, word has it Joey Kramer is going to be at the Boston camp.
Here’s some details: Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp is open to all ages and all skill levels. You begin by being assigned to bands based on skill levels and choices of counselor. The counselor then works with you all day, rehearsing and giving tips, and then each band gets to take the stage as an opening act for King’s X and Extreme (again, name talent). In Orlando they’re playing at House of Blues, so don’t expect venues to be some rinky dink bowling alley - this is pro level stuff. You can also choose different packages, one of which puts you on the road with the tour for 5 days.
All the performances are taped and posted on the Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp website. The public then gets to vote to send one band to London where they will get to record at the legendary Abbey Road, play the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool, and win an at-home recording studio from Yamaha.
This is such a fabulous opportunity, it makes me want to dust off my guitars and have a go. I want to jam with Gilby - hope his list isn’t already filled.
