Favorite Lyrics: Paul Westerberg

Paul Westerberg

Where do I start? I’ve never put a top songwriters list together, but I guarantee Paul Westerberg would be right there alongside John Lennon, Brian Wilson and Alex Chilton.

Like the Pulp entry I posted earlier this week, I was listening to Westerberg’s 14 Songs earlier and felt that even though it’s not one of my favorites, there are lyrics worthy of mentioning…and songs worthy of sharing.

Paul really has a way of wording things. He’ll take phrases you’re acquainted with and jumble them into some new…like changing “dot your i’s and cross your t’s” to “dot my T’s and cross my eyes” or something along those lines. Know what I mean?!

While not his most clever lyrics, it’s what’s currently in my player…

“Used to wear my heart on my sleeve…I guess it still shows” - “First Glimmer”

“Beautiful flowers in your garden
But the most beautiful by far
The one growing wild in the garbage dump…even here, even here we are” - “Even Here We Are”

PS: Has anyone heard how his hand’s healing?

Yes, Paul is an amazing lyric writer. Even the “Open Season” stuff from last year had some truly great moments despite his slight disowning of it. Anyway, more news on Paul is here, including a show he did in September, presumably post-hand-heal: http://members.aol.com/paulspage/news.htm

I saw Paul in September at the thing Mark E mentions above and his hand didn’t seem to be troubling. He sounded great!

  3. In the Blogs: Some stuff about Styx and lyrics and the book at Paul Westerberg.net, a blog Says:

Paulwesterberg.com says something like “Ask Santy Claus for a new Paul Westerberg album in 2008.” So hopefully something’s happening?
