Revenge of the Weekend Jam

Oh man, I’ve been away from Weekend Jams for far too long!

Of course, I’ll admit that part of the reason I’d taken a break from this particular category has been the general lack of killer remixes and/or dance tracks this year. There’s been some good stuff, undoubtedly, but in ‘07 it seemed as though every other day brought a new club hit.

I mean, this year we’ve had that appalling Santogold/Justice mashup floating around, but I’m not posting that (ya know, because it’s awful). Or that new Debbie Harry song. Phew boy, does THAT track make me cry.

But hey, it’s summertime and I’ve got some good ones this week, so that might be a sign of things to come, yeah?

MP3: Client - Xerox Machine (N Joi Radio Edit)

This one is off Client’s new remix album, amusingly called Untitled Remix. Heartland was one of my favorite albums from last year, even though it didn’t seem to get much heat from blogs. Maybe it’s because I’m just a total sucker for girls in matching outfits singing coldly over electro beats. Who knows? But I could definitely get down to this at a club (and currently do in the car).

MP3: IAMX - Spit It Out (Andrew Kowalski Remix)

Another Metropolis artist that has yet to get his props in the USA. This album has been out elsewhere for 2 years! Ridiculous. This remix is by German techno king Andrew Kowalski, who has done some remixes for Dave Gahan as well as Beyonce, of all people. Don’t hold it against him - this is a solid remix for a dark dancefloor.

MP3: Junkie XL - Cities In Dust

A very underappreciated remixer in a lot of ways. Junkie XL is probably most famous for that remix he did for Elvis Presley’s ‘A Little Less Conversation’. However, he’s done a lot cooler work. Sometimes he has a tendency to let his remixes run a bit long, but he knows the importance of quality and sound. This isn’t a remix exactly, more like a re-arrangement. It features vocals from Lauren Rocket.

MP3: Cut Copy - Lights & Music (Boys Noize Happy Birthday Remix)

I guarantee Cut Copy will be on a lot of ‘Best of’ lists this year. I wasn’t sure if he (now they) could match the first album, but they did and then some. This single gets the remix magic from Berlin’s Boys Noize. Sometimes their mixes can be a bit overwhelming, but here they seem to compliment the original track well.

MP3: Van She - Strangers (Van She Tech Remix)

Woohoo! Just after posting about the new Van She yesterday, someone sent me this fantastic mix that the band did on their own track. These guys just have a magic touch when it comes to remixing. Their Feist remix was certainly top of the pops last year, and it seems like they’re the best suited to give their own work a once over. Great track.

MP3: The Presets - This Boy’s In Love (LifeLike Remix)

The third face in the Aussie/Modular Holy Trinity (Van She & Cut Copy being the other two, obviously) is also releasing new material this year. Their new album will hit shelves next Tuesday, but in the meantime you can dance to this remix by Kistune’s LifeLike. The core of the song is left intact, but it’s a stomper!

Parties of interest after the jump…

Baskervilles

New York’s own Baskervilles have a new album coming out which you need to know about. It’s called “Twilight” and will be released June 3rd.

The band had a fascinating way of putting the album together - it started as an mp3 project with 14 different singles, each released with album art designed by a different contemporary artist. The album is, natch, a collection of the singles.

This is fabulous quirky pop, complete with orchestra. Check out these tunes:

MP3: Baskervilles - Caught In A Crosswalk

MP3: Baskervilles - A Little More Time

As always, keep an eye on their MySpace page for updates and tours.

David Ford: Go to Hell

David Ford is not only a wonderful singer, but a songwriter as well.

Please go watch his video for ‘Go To Hell’. The video was recorded live & I think it’s pretty awesome.

..I never treated you so mean
Like that’s a reason to be proud..

From his Press Kit:

David Ford is set to release his sophomore album, Songs For The Road, in April 2008 (out digitally now) on Original Signal Recordings, his first for the artist development company. Songs For The Road comes two years after his acclaimed debut, I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I’ve Caused (Columbia, 2006). Heralded by Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, and Elle, among others, the first album even moved The New York Times to write, “Like Damien Rice and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, Mr. Ford builds stately, inexorable crescendos…”

From the rending opening strings of blackened-heart-on-a-sleeve first single “Go To Hell” to the tender, mournful pedal steel of “…And So You Fell,” it’s clear Ford – with his open-throated, raspy howl – is not the standard wounded male troubadour. Songs For The Road expands on where Ford left off with I Sincerely Apologise…, building the singer’s gift for quiet intensity, lush melodies, and haunted lyricism to a triumphant swell. Seething with an absence of forgiveness in its penetrating self-reflection, Songs For The Road is a refreshing album by a man and his guitar anyone would be proud to wear like a singed badge of honor.

All of David’s tour dates can be found on his MySpace page. Please go check him out & support him if he’s in your area.

Hey it’s Van She!

Where have these guys been? Working hard on new material, apparently, in addition to giving us some of the best remixes of the last few years. Feist, Utah Saints, The Presets, Martina Topley Bird, Tiga, Dragonette - you name it, they remixed it.

The Aussie foursome is back with a new track, called ‘Strangers’. The album it’s taken from, V, will be out in August from Modular. It’s sure to be coated in fabulousness, if this track is any indication. No MP3 unfortunately, but I’ll offer you some blasts from the Van She past.

Free WAS track!

This must be free download day or something. I swear, almost every email I’ve received today has been a top band offering free tracks. Take my MP3’s - please! This is nothing to complain about, since I’ve had a glut of free songs in my inbox that…well, let’s just say the band’s might have been better served sending them to someone else.

We Are Scientists will be releasing album # 2 next Tuesday, but in the meantime you can enjoy this track from Brain Thrust Mastery. We’ve been big cheerleaders for the band for a while now. I interviewed Keith Murray a few weeks ago, and Kip has already included WAS in 2 out of 4 podcasts. So clearly they have the Rock Sellout Seal of Approval.

Elvis Costello

You know Elvis Costello is the man, right? I mean, he just is. You can’t dispute it, so just stop right now and accept it.

Costello is one of those artists that refuses to let age prevent him from creating new material. He’s an even rarer animal in his pursuit to make sure that new material isn’t just recycled from his older tracks. I’m not saying every album he’s put out in the last 10 years has been a slam dunk, but I never felt like he was shoving something out just to make a quick nostalgic buck.

He just released his 3rd album with The Imposters on Tuesday, titled Momofuku (okay, so maybe he could have picked a better title). The album was born out of an invitation from Jenny Lewis for Elvis to sing on her new album. Apparently those sessions were fertile ground beyond just Jenny’s album - she can be found singing vocals on several tracks here. Momofuku also features songwriting collaborations with Loretta Lynn & Rosanne Cash.

All of which just reaffirms the fact that Costello can never be confined to one, easily-defined genre. You can preview the tracks below (Windows Streaming Audio) and check to see if he’s coming around anywhere near you after the jump.

Young Knives - Up All Night

Speaking of free, Young Knives are now offering up yet another track from their absolutely awesome second LP. The track is ‘Up All Night’ and comes complete with wacky video (no fake rabbits or real snakes this time out). The nice fella with the bass guitar and glasses is Thomas Dartnall, who gave us an interview earlier this week.

The video features a band’s worst nightmare - that of a crowd turning on them. It then quickly turns into a rowdy crowd’s worst nightmare - a band that fights back (and knows kung-fu). Worth it simply for the facial expressions.
